I Love the Smell of Hypocrisy in the Morning

Yesterday, Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, flew fifty, (count ‘em 50), illegal immigrants from Florida to Martha’s Vineyard, one of the toniest places in the United States of America. It exceeds Napa and Bel Air in its wealth, celebrity and status. I’ve never been to Martha’s Vineyard, but I’m pretty sure I can’t afford to go.
Martha’s Vineyard hosts over 100,000 visitors each summer. Lavish prices attend the homes in Martha’s Vineyard. One of the more “affordable” homes on Zillow, a 3 bedroom, 1 bath is listed at $699k. Most are well over the one million dollar range. Having a home on Martha’s Vineyard is not just a place of island respite, it is a status symbol of having “arrived.”
And while Martha’s Vineyard is able to accommodate a 100,000 person influx of tourists every summer, and in fact, depend on that onslaught to fuel their economy via vacation rentals, B&B’s and hotels plus four star restaurants, outrageously priced wines and spirits, and lots of shops selling overpriced clothes and jewelry; they can’t seem to figure out how to house 50 illegal immigrants even for a few nights. Are there no churches on Martha’s Vineyard? No YMCA? No High School Gym?
To make matters even weirder, Martha’s Vineyard declared itself a “Sanctuary City/Island” meaning that if any illegal come to Martha’s Vineyard, they could not be forcibly removed and La Migra was not welcome on the island to round them up.
It was hysterical how quickly the homeless coordinator for Martha’s Vineyard, reacted to a bus of fifty being unceremoniously dropped off on its front door.
Lisa Belcastro said the island simply “does not have the resources” to help the migrants long-term, and they would eventually have to travel "somewhere else."
Amazing that Fifty people would overwhelm one of the wealthiest places in the United States, surely among the wealthiest in the world. Why in the world does Ms. Belcastro claim that such a wealthy place “does not have the resources?” Hey! The weather is still very nice, go to Walmart and buy some tents and sleeping bags. Set up a makeshift kitchen and porta-potties. I’m thinking all that property tax revenue Martha’s Vineyard collects includes a “contingency fund.”
The problem was averted this morning when buses showed up to bus the migrants to Joint Base Cape Cod. That was fast! Twenty-four hours and You’re Out! You’d think they’d keep them around long enough to figure out which ones could do maid work and maintain landscaping. Talk about judging by the color of the skin, not the content of their domestic skills…
The whole episode spotlighted the extraordinary hypocrisy of elite, dare I say white liberals? The “for thee but not for me” crowd just showed us their panties. But I can sympathize with their nervous xenophobia, nearly 90% of Martha’s Vineyard’s residents are white, while not even 2% are Hispanic. They must be forgiven for they “no habla Espanol”.
Today, the mainstream pundits cited DeSantis as a human trafficker, even though he was just doing what President Joe Biden has done for two years. Pack ‘em in a plane or a bus, send them on their way with tasty sandwiches and drop them off in a location that is not prepared to handle the influx or provide necessary services. But instead of Biden’s thousands, DeSantis sent 50. I’ve hosted Christmas parties with more people than that.
Meanwhile none of this solves the Border Thingey. It just kicks the can down the road so it can rot under its own weight pounded by the elements.
Here’s a Tip: Finish the Wall, Close the Border and Fully Fund Border Patrol.
As I always tell my husband, “The shortest distance between two things is a straight line.”
